Job Description

Position Summary:

The Scientist II, Manufacturing Sciences will serve as the lead for projects related to development and improvement of DNA-based diagnostic reagents with minimum supervision.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Simultaneously manage and prioritize multiple projects and products across multiple functional groups while meeting target due dates with minimal supervision

  • Drive the day-to-day operations to maintain the workflow

  • Work independently, or with peers, to actively improve processes and procedures, as well as identify, develop and implement solutions to solve problems with moderate complexity

  • Design, create and/or provide experimental tasks to designated Scientist or self and complete data analysis using uType, SureTyper, Fusion, or equivalent software

  • Understand and able to perform Scientist I job responsibilities

  • Train current and new Scientist I/II in lab functions/procedures/analysis and provide guidance and support throughout projects and product builds. Processes include reconstitution, quantification, QC test, organization and maintenance of all raw materials such as oligonucleotides, ancillary reagents, genomic DNAs, etc.

  • Operate and train Scientists in the use of SAP, UV spectrophotometer, thermal cycler, agarose gel electrophoresis, UV image analyzer, genetic analyzer, qPCR instruments, Luminex instruments, high speed centrifuge and other hardware

  • Monitor performance of equipment/machines/tools and manufacturing processes

  • Update and maintain required SOPs and quality records of equipment maintenance, tests, analyses and other relevant data

  • Prepare accurate and timely reports to Scientist III/Management

  • If necessary, support their team as backup during supervisor absence

  • Implement and execute practical knowledge of PPI Business System/LEAN concepts, including continuous improvement, with minimal supervision

  • Be able to identify individual goals, review and update Supervisor throughout the year and complete the Performance Management and Development (PMD) process

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understands and applies principles, concepts, theories and standards of HLA and scientific/technical field or software within own area

  • Good knowledge of related regulatory/industry considerations, compliance issues and/ or scientific discovery

  • Knowledge and extensive hands-on experience of molecular biology and recombinant DNA techniques

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in decision making and execution of duties with minimal supervision

  • Demonstrated positive role model behavior in a team environment

  • Self-starter with the ability to positively motivate others in a cooperative fashion

  • Be able to efficiently handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously

  • During situations that have high impact to the business, quickly escalate them by bringing solutions and consulting with Supervisor

  • Follow oral and written directions

  • Communicate effectively with members of the group, as well as those in other departments

  • Plan and organize in a consistent manner and maintain work schedules.

  • Read, understand and implement written laboratory procedures

  • Collects and organizes data in an appropriate manner, including documenting all experiments in a laboratory notebook or appropriate documentation

  • Ability to use PCs and MS Office for data input and/or analysis

  • Encourages/challenges others and self for continuous improvement

  • Collaborate effectively and build productive cross-functional relationships with colleagues in other functions, including but not limited to the following: Marketing, Sales, R&D, Operations, Regulatory/Quality, Supply Chain, and Product Management

  • Develop skills to perform other duties as assigned

  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive laboratory and business data

  • Ensure that safe laboratory procedures and protocols are followed at all times, especially in the application of universal precautions in handling of all blood and blood products

  • Ensure all processes and teams are in adherence of cGMP and GDP

  • Ensure compliance with corporate, site, and regulatory policies, practices, and guidelines

  • Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently work at lab bench, in low temperature freezers and at PC workstations

  • Handle blood samples and blood byproducts occasionally

  • Some lifting of objects including laboratory instrumentation of 35 pounds

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Molecular Biology or related field required.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a laboratory setting

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $66,000.00–$99,000.00.
