Job Summary

Transportation Services at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Transit Operations Supervisor! This position will supervise day to day functions of the Transit operation by scheduling buses, drivers, and driver trainings. This position provides bus drivers with accurate information for completion of their work, advising drivers of proper procedures, schedule or route changes, and updates on safety concerns. This includes managing the driver payroll, with support from the Driver Coordinator. This position works closely with various campus departments and student organizations to provide charter transportation of persons in university buses and other types of vehicles, which includes advising prospective clients about the different options Transportation Services offers.

The position supports and backs up the Transit Manager, supervise daily activity of bus drivers, and provides support to evaluations and bus driver disciplinary actions initiated by the Transit Manager. The role will also train and instruct bus drivers and administrative staff, and help coordinate and assist with planning and logistics of major events. Finally, the position acts as a back-up driver in case of emergencies, under-staffing, or to cover for random drug tests.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Transit Operations

  • Assist Transit Manager by helping oversee daily functions of the Transit operation, including that all bus runs are properly staffed.

  • Act as an after-hours contact.

  • Assign all available runs, including those for emergencies and training, for bus drivers. Assignments are based on individual driver requests, availability, skills, and seniority. This includes finding replacement drivers for driver illnesses or no shows, or for campus emergencies. May fulfill driving assignments if suitable alternatives are not available.

  • Review and modify driver schedules to accommodate charter runs, trainings, or meetings.

  • Develop or adjust scheduling processes to ensure efficient operations.

  • Serve as a point of contact for bus drivers regarding various aspects of the operation.

  • Manage attendance to ensure drivers are on their route or charter, and are on their assigned bus.

  • Notify leadership of any accidents or mechanical issues with a bus.

  • Initiate contact with external resources to resolve problems that impact routine or charter operations. This includes contacting groups not at pickup locations, vehicles parked illegally and are blocking traffic flow, open or broken campus guard gates, dangerous road conditions, emergencies, malfunctioning road signals, etc. Agency contacts could include UCPD, City of Boulder, Facilities Management, etc.

  • Provide guidance to campus departments and other external clients regarding the process and procedures related to reserving a bus charter.

  • Evaluate the acceptance of a charter reservation based on guidelines set forth by the University and the Transportation Services department.

  • Create organizational processes for tracking reservation requests, emails, and filing systems.

  • Drive buses as needed when there is an emergency situation or random drug testing is enforced.

  • Attend occasional night and weekend meetings, as needed.

Supervision

  • Supervise daily activities of bus drivers, assign regular bus drivers their scheduled hours for each semester, perform on-board and in transit ride checks to evaluate driver's safety actions and behaviors. Provide follow-up coaching as needed.

  • Provide support by assisting the Transit Manager with the hiring process, discipline and evaluations.

  • Help evaluate data, audit driver's hours, generate reports, write estimates, enter/audit payroll records, and research historical data.

  • Manage the trip ticket process, including account auditing trip tickets to verify accuracy and investigate discrepancies.

  • Enter payroll for staff.

  • Notify drivers of decisions made that impact immediate Transit operations. These changes include rerouting due to road closures, accidents, traffic issues, weather, etc.

  • Collaborate with Transit Manager for time off requests by staff and mid-year and annual evaluations.

  • Ensure bus drivers are ready and equipped to drive and are maintaining a safe vehicle. Ensure all bus drivers are performing the required DOT pre/post trip inspections. Periodically inspect buses to ensure they are truly safe for operation inspections have been completed.

Training

  • Train other Transit staff and bus drivers on established policies and procedures to maintain operational readiness.

  • Monitor bus driver skills to verify they receive necessary training and ongoing skills development.

  • Review staff driving certifications for validity and ensure all drivers complete relevant training and certifications to follow Federal, State, University, and Department, laws, rules and policies.

  • Collaborate with Fleet Training Specialist on training needs, follow-up and scheduling of training.

  • Attend seminars and workshops pertaining to the position or the department that can improve operational efficiency and personal communication skills.

Other Duties

  • Complete special projects such as reviewing emissions and registration information, creating cost comparison analysis with competing agencies, recording accurate information from client satisfaction surveys, and other assignments as directed.

  • Fulfill other administrative functions when needed. This includes answering the main phone line, greeting clients, assisting with vehicle registrations, and with lost and found.

  • Assist with other functions including set up of DDC room, moving vehicles, and attending meetings.

What You Should Know

  • The anticipated work schedule for this in-person role is Monday through Friday, 9am-6pm, rotating on call and other times as operational need determines.

The salary range for this role is $53,364 - $72,000 annually.

What We Require

  • 4 years experience, including supervisory experience, working in commercial motor vehicle, transit operations, or a related field. Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Possess a valid Class A or B CDL driver's license with passenger endorsement within 12 months of start date. Training will be in house.

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy while working on multiple tasks.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally and succinctly via email, phone, radio, or in person.
